Girls Israel Volunteer Experience
Good Shabbos from Yerucham! (Week 2)
Dear Parents, Our first full week on NCSY GIVE and what an awesome week we've had! After a beautiful shabbos in Mevaseret, we began our week on a high, heading to Beit Elazraki, a children's home in Netanya that provides a family environment for children unable to live with their families. We ran programming for four different age groups, made friends and enjoyed recognizing the incredible power of bringing simcha, joy, to others. From there we enjoyed a delicious BBQ and then headed to the beach for some R & R. It was well deserved! We then hopped back on the bus and made our way to a rehab center in Raanana, where we performed our long-anticipated flash mob that the girls have been practicing since before our arrival. The patients and their families were wowed by our coordination and skill! Our day ended with a shiur by Rabbi Menachem Nissel, the Mashgiach Ruchani of NCSY, and we headed to sleep, exhausted but proud of our chesed filled day. On Monday, we divided between our two buses and jumped into a day of giving and learning. Bus 1 began the day at Save A Child's Heart, an organization that provides for children in need of heart surgery, and then made our way Chames Israel, running programming for children with varying levels of disabilities. Bus 2 began their day working alongside blind, deaf and mute employees in a factory, and then packaged food in Yaffo. After a meaningful morning, we all had the merit of visiting Dialogue with Time, a new exhibit that allows visitors to journey through time under the guidance of an elderly tour guide. The conversations were rich and deep, allowing us to appreciate all that we have and respect those older than us. Tuesday started off with a bang as we trained to be... professional medical clowns! We learned to laugh, walk, make balloon animals, and even received a red nose at the end! Then we put our skills to action as we visited both a pediatric and geriatric ward at a local hospital. The patients loved our costumes, energy and spirit! We ended the day with a delicious dinner at a fancy Tel Aviv restaurant and a wild and crazy night activity back home! Wednesday began early in the morning, but was well worth the wake up as we drove down to Be'er Sheva to paint a school for children with disabilities. The best part? The kids were there and were able to play with them, learn with them and show them a good time! That afternoon we arrived at Leket, an organization that collects vegetables in the fields and donates them to underprivileged families or to soup kitchens. We collected TONS of tomatoes and had a blast doing so! (Aside from the bug bites, that is!) That night we learned how to measure with bananas during a night activity called Banana Measurements! It was hilarious and delicious, as we had banana splits at the end. YUM! Thursday, both buses visited Yad La'kashish, an organization that employs and empowers elderly immigrants to Israel by teaching them a new trade and giving them a job. We sang, danced, and made sure to visit the gift shop where all of the handmade gifts wowed us... and our wallets. Bus 1 then visited Ohr Meir U'vracha, a food packaging organization that provides shabbos food for families of victims of terror and Bus 2 did an archeological dig in Emek Tzurim. We then all met in the Old City for mincha at the kotel and a tour of Ir David and the Chizkiyahu Water Tunnels. What an inspirational day! We hurried back home to pack, have mishmar with Rabbi Felberman and get ready for our shabbos down south. And here we are! Friday in the Negev! We helped organize a clothing and furniture gemach in the area and then came to our home for the weekend at Midreshet B'yachad. We're very eager to experience shabbos in the desert and can't wait to share all of the highlights with you! Wishing you and yours a beautiful shabbos and a meaningful Shabbos Chazon and Tisha Ba'av. May we see the coming of Moshiach speedily, in our days. Erin and the NCSY GIVE family PS- Don't forget to share our journey with us at give.ncsy.org!
